09/12/2008 - Pittsburgh, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The St. Louis Cardinals have shelved pitcher Chris Carpenter for the remainder of the season with persistent shoulder weakness.
Carpenter was in the midst of his third start of the season in early August when the right-hander strained his right triceps. After hitting the 15-day disabled list and being subsequently activated, he tossed an inning of relief September 2 but felt further weakness.
He underwent an additional shoulder evaluation and tests confirmed a strain of the teres major and indicated new nerve irritation in the shoulder. The injury is not related to the ligament reconstructive surgery on his pitching elbow performed in 2007 nor is it a recurrence of his nerve injury in 2004. The team is optimistic for a full return in 2009.
The oft-injured Carpenter logged just 21 1/3 innings in five games over the past two seasons and made just one appearance in 2007 before undergoing season-ending Tommy John surgery.
The 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner has a career mark of 100-70 and a 4.08 earned run average in 250 games, including 232 starts, over parts of 11 seasons for Toronto and St. Louis.
