09/12/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Minnesota Twins will embark on another long road trip that begins tonight at Baltimore's Camden Yards, where the playoff hopefuls start up a three-game series with the Orioles.
This evening's tilt marks the first of 10 straight away tests for the Twins, who enter the set trailing first-place Chicago by just one game in the American League Central standings. Minnesota, which is just 31-40 on the road this season, will next visit Cleveland for three games before wrapping up the trek with a key four-game set at AL East leader Tampa Bay.
The Twins had a 14-game road trip from August 21-September 4 due to the Republican National Convention being held in Minneapolis, and won just five times on the four-city tour.
Minnesota has also dropped three of its last five contests on a recent homestand that ended with Thursday's extra-inning loss to cellar-dwelling Kansas City. David DeJesus' single in the top of the 10th frame accounted for the game-winning run as the Royals avoided a sweep of the three-game series with a 3-2 decision.
Mark Teahen and Alberto Callaspo poked consecutive one-out singles off Matt Guerrier (6-8) in the 10th to put runners at the corners for DeJesus, who lined Dennys Reyes' first pitch into right field to score Teahen.
Francisco Liriano pitched very well for the Twins in a no-decision, as the talented left-hander allowed just two runs on six hits and did not walk a batter in his eight-inning stint. Justin Morneau went 2-for-4 with an RBI to pace Minnesota offensively.
The Twins try for a rebound tonight behind Scott Baker, who will be seeking to extend a string of quality starts. The right-hander has yielded three runs or less and pitched at least six innings in each of his last four outings, despite only a 1-1 record to show for those efforts.
Baker was last in action on Saturday, when he permitted three runs and just four hits over 7 1/3 innings in a no-decision against Detroit. Prior to that start, he threw six frames of one-run ball to defeat Oakland on August 31.
The Oklahoma State product is 1-0 with a 4.30 ERA in three lifetime matchups with Baltimore. Baker had a no-decision against the Orioles at the Metrodome in June, a game in which he surrendered two runs over five innings.
Baltimore finds itself well out of the playoff picture and has lost 10 of its last 12 games. The Orioles are coming in off a rare recent winning note, however, after posting a 6-3 triumph over Cleveland yesterday to earn a split of a four-game set.
Melvin Mora drove in a pair of runs and Nick Markakis and Aubrey Huff both scored twice for Baltimore. Markakis ended the night with two hits in five at- bats.
Lance Cormier (3-3) recorded the win after throwing three scoreless innings in relief. Former Twin Brian Bass started for the Orioles and gave up three runs -- one earned -- over the first 4 1/3 innings.
Daniel Cabrera will get another chance to work out his mound troubles when he gets the call for Baltimore this evening. The erratic hurler hasn't pitched more than 4 1/3 innings in any of his last three starts and is 0-2 with an awful 12.27 ERA over that rough stretch.
Cabrera lasted just three innings in Saturday's encounter with Oakland and walked six batters before being yanked. He also gave up two runs and was saddled with the loss in his team's 5-1 setback.
The native Dominican does own a 5-3 record with a 3.92 ERA in nine career starts against Minnesota, but was tagged for six runs in six innings during a loss to the Twins back on June 4.
Baltimore took two of three games from Minnesota at the Metrodome earlier this season, but the Twins won all seven meetings between the clubs in 2007. Since the start of the 2006 campaign, Minnesota is 14-5 overall against the Orioles and 8-2 at Camden Yards.
