Cardinals aim for second straight win in Arizona

Baseball Betting Lines

09/03/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The St. Louis Cardinals will try to win back-to-back games in Arizona for the first time in over three years when they play the rubber match of their three-game set with the Diamondbacks this afternoon at Chase Field.

The Cardinals dropped Monday's series opener, their seventh straight loss at Chase Field, before posting an 8-2 victory last night. St. Louis hasn't won two straight in the desert since winning three in a row from July 4-6, 2005 over Arizona, which is still 9-7 in its last 16 matchups versus the Cardinals.

One day after hitting four homers off of Arizona pitching, Troy Glaus, Yadier Molina and Felipe Lopez all went deep in St. Louis' six-run victory. The win halted St. Louis' four-game slide and moved it to within 5 1/2 games of National League Wild Card-leading Milwaukee.

Arizona, meanwhile, saw its lead over Los Angeles for first place in the NL West shrink to 1 1/2 games after the Dodgers beat San Diego last night.

Molina extended his hitting streak to 13 games, hitting .380 (19-for-50) during the run with two homers and nine RBI. However, he is still just a career .194 hitter in 20 games versus the Diamondbacks.

Molina is also just 1-for-10 lifetime against Arizona starter Doug Davis, who will pitch today.

Davis won for the second time in three starts Friday versus the Dodgers, allowing two runs on eight hits over five innings. The left-hander improved to 6-8 with a 4.59 earned run average on the season.

The 32-year-old Davis is 4-5 with a 5.05 ERA in 13 lifetime games (12 starts) versus the Cardinals.

Kyle Lohse will start for the Cardinals hoping he got back on the right track last time out. The right-hander had allowed three runs or more in each of his last seven starts before Friday's outing in Houston, where he gave up just two runs on seven hits over eight innings in his second straight no-decision.

Lohse has still dropped his last three decisions, having not won since August 1, and is 13-6 with a 3.89 ERA this year. His career high for wins in a season is 14, set in 2003 with Minnesota.

The 29-year-old is 1-1 with a 4.00 ERA in four career starts against Arizona.

Two late additions for the Diamondbacks accounted for the offense in last night's loss. David Eckstein and Adam Dunn each singled in a run, but Arizona still lost for the seventh time in nine games.

Dunn is hitting .279 (17-for-61) with three homers and 13 RBI in 20 games with Arizona this year, while Eckstein -- a former Cardinal -- is 3-for-8 with three RBI in two games since coming over from Toronto. Eckstein is hitting .421 (8-for-19) in five lifetime games against St. Louis.
