No seconds: 49ers RB Coffee abruptly retires

Football Betting Lines

08/13/2010 - Santa Clara, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - San Francisco 49ers running back Glen Coffee, the team's third-round pick in the 2009 draft, retired from the NFL on Friday at the age of 23.

Coffee did not attend practice on Thursday and was also absent for Friday's session before issuing a statement on his playing career without going into much detail.

"This has been a tough decision for me to make, but at this time in my life I feel it is best for me that I move on from football," Coffee said in the release. "I appreciate what the 49ers, my teammates and coaches have done for me, and I wish them a blessed season and all the best in the future."

The Alabama product rushed for 226 yards and a touchdown on 83 carries and caught 11 passes for 76 yards for the 49ers in 2009, apparently his only season in the league.

Coffee led the Crimson Tide in rushing in 2008, gaining 1,383 yards and 10 TDs while serving as a mentor for last year's Heisman Trophy winner, Mark Ingram.

Rookie Anthony Dixon and five-year veteran Michael Robinson are the only other running backs on San Francisco's roster behind starter Frank Gore.
